In the heartland is a split-bill performance of two distinctly midwestern solo performances.

Ouroboros by Nejla Yatkin is an evening-length interactive theatrical solo dance that takes the audience on a transformative journey. Set in the round, the performance's original composition, ASL translation, and a fusion of dance styles, including contemporary and Middle Eastern dance. The piece draws inspiration from the ancient snake dances of the Middle East and centers around the powerful symbol of Ouroboros.

Alpert award winning choreographer Jeanine Durning comes together with a group of stellar woman dance artists and thinkers (Andee Scott, Mary Williford-Shade, Heidi Brewer, and Clare Croft) for The Invitation Situation, a choreo-performance experiment based on Durning’s signature movement practice, nonstopping. The Invitation Situation exposes both the precision and precarity of the performer’s decision-making from moment to moment, somewhere between personal agency and collective will – grappling with time, place, and makeshift meanings.

The Bridge Dance Festival began in 2018 as the culmination of four years of Japanese-focused programming at Links Hall, including the National Performance Network Asian Exchange, Beyond the Box, and Links to Japan. Now in its fifth year, Bridge Dance continues to establish its role facilitating  AAPI Dancers from Chicago will present their own new experimental pieces, exploring the expression of 'self'.

Pianists reworks choreography from Jacques Tati’s film Trafic. Our Carnival’s concern with extinct or endangered species considers Fossils as resurrection: DNA cloning, the prophet Ezekiel in the Valley of the Dry Bones. The Swan turns to Ralph Ellison’s description of a green Oklahoma river snake. Essi Kausalainen’s signature textile designs provide settings and costumes as extraordinary body-habitats.
