Paul Scudder

2019 Co-MISSION Artist-in-Residence

Paul Scudder is a performer and composer who uses music, specifically the voice, to address personal issues regarding identity, mental health and social structures. His compositions focus on the choreographed and inherent movement of performing music, the harmony and tension of vocalization and motility. This interplay is important to him both as a tool for learning and creating but also for acknowledging the individuality and humanity of each performer. Paul Scudder performed with the Walkabout Theater ensemble from 2012-2016 and works as a freelance videographer and composer. He holds a degree in Theater from the University of California, San Diego.

PROJECT AT LINKS HALL

2000m | December 2019

2000m is an opera using text from Sappho, Emily Dickinson, and Vaslav Nijinksy to create a meditation on queer identity. The legacy of these three historical egures each has a contentious relationship with queerness, an ever-shifting discord between facts, hearsay and contemporary values. '2000m' manifests ambiguities and questions surrounding this trio using instrumental and vocal music combined with dance to invite dialogue for and about queer folx.
