2005  Poonie's Cabaret

Looking to perform? Poonie’s Cabaret is free and easy!

Looking to express ideas in a nontraditional, relaxed, honest, format? Do you have a piece that’s not quite ready for primetime but still deserves a chance to be presented; or are you a fringe performer who just wants to figure some stuff out? Perhaps (and I am just saying perhaps) maybe you are just like us: slightly confused, curious, in need of a nudge.

This is the deal: we provide the space, maybe even an assignment if you need inspiration. You provide the work, no more than 15 minutes in length. Any work. We welcome all forms of expression: music, dance, contact improvisation, puppetry, performance art, theater, live painting, queer expression, Indian classical singing, tap dancing, cheerleading, hip hop and b-boy/girling, film/video,freestyle rapping, freestyle martial arts, four square, capoeira, baroque music, freejazz, middle eastern music/dance, flamenco...etc. We’ll program up to four artists/groups per show. We are not picky people.

We are Brian Robert Hinkle and Matthew Hollis, the new hosts/curators of Poonie’s Cabaret.

Poonie's Cabaret was created by Selene Carter, who was inspired by Patrick Scully’s “Patrick’s Cabaret” in Minneapolis, MN. Poonie’s is named for Poonie Dodson, a much-loved Chicago dancer/choreographer who died of AIDS in the early 90's. Performers and audience members are asked for a $5 donation. Proceeds from the cabaret go to the Links Hall Duncan Erley Memorial Coming Out of the Closet Fund, which is periodically awarded to artists whose work explores the realms of healing, gay activism, and spiritual and sexual transformation.
