Admission $15 (Students $12)
Post-show discussions after all performances

Links Hall presents the premier of Arithmetic of Shadows, an expanded version of Eye Cycle, accompanied by the publication launch of "GLANCE: Molly Shanahan’s Eye Cycle" - free copies of the book will be distributed to audience members at these performances. Since 1994, Mad Shak has supported the creation and performance of contemporary dance by Molly Shanahan, whose work is based in the fluid architecture of pure movement and anchored by her collaborations in process and performance. Mad Shak is the 2004 recipient of the Chicago Dance and Music Alliance Elizabeth F. Cheney Award for Artistic Achievement in their 2003-04 season and Shanahan is recognized by her peers in the field as one of the most prolific, tenacious, and compositionally skilled dance artists in Chicago.

With a trio of collaborators (dancer Kristina Fluty, composer Kevin O’Donnell, and lighting designer Josh Weckesser) Eye Cycle began as an investigation of the impact of light, shadow, framing, and perspective on the experience and perception of both live and recorded movement.

Eye Cycle was commissioned by Links Hall and Denison University, with a Creation Fund Award from the National Performance Network; in June 2004, presentations of an earlier stage in Eye Cycle’s development took place at Links Hall.

“Magnificent discovery…It is rare for a critic of dance to be suddenly in front of a singular universe, new, with clean and unclassifiable language, resulting from a fusion of genres and references reinterpreted with maturity and audacity...This is the case with Eye Cycle… In beautiful complicity with her companions of creation, Molly Shanahan has succeeded in creating not only one new dance, but a new way of looking at dance.” - Aline Apostolska, La Presse (Montreal)

RELATED EVENTS

Public Workshop with Molly Shanahan
Saturday June 4, 2005
1.30pm-4.30pm
$20

Open to all levels of experience, this workshop integrates the multiple documentation processes explored in GLANCE. Shanahan will encourage participants to be curious about the very notion of geographical center and to view themselves as epicenters that shift in time rather than as fixed spatial configurations; illuminating relationships between external sight and internal sensing, present moment awareness and memory. For workshop information/registration: (773) 281-0824 or

GLANCE: Molly Shanahan’s Eye Cycle
Publication Launch

Sunday June 5, 2005 – 5pm
Free

GLANCE: Molly Shanahan’s Eye Cycle documents from multiple perspectives the creative development of Eye Cycle. Including an interview with Shanahan by Lucia Mauro, journal extracts, audience responses, design sketches, video stills, and a CD featuring O’Donnell’s score, GLANCE has been developed to spur ongoing dialog about the nature of documentation of live performance. This event includes the participation of contributors to GLANCE, and audience discussion

Masterclass with Molly Shanahan
Tuesday June 7, 2005
10.30am-12.30pm
$12

This masterclass will focus on the experience of the eyes in shaping spatial connections in contemporary movement. Participants will be encouraged to shift their attention from the body's formal outcomes toward ocular curiosity about the shifting landscape of the studio environment. Always inviting individual adaptation and interpretation of sequences, Shanahan tends toward an attention to gravity and flow, poly-articulation of the body's spirals, and a gentle allowance of the ball-and-socket joints. For masterclass information/registration: (773) 281-0824 or info@linkshall.org
